TRUSSVILLE — Cub Scout Pack #216 hosted their annual Pinewood Derby at the Trussville Civic Center on Saturday.

Participants raced vehicles they have spent weeks building, honing and perfecting. These vehicles must conform to official derby specifications of being constructed from the official Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby kit, weighing 5 ounces or less, and measuring no taller than 4” high x 2.75” wide x 7” long.

Beyond the restrictions’ racers were allowed to let their imaginations run wild; and run wild they did with remarkable creativity and ingenuity.  The Pinewood Derby cars came in all shapes, sizes and looked fantastic speeding down the track with speeds scales of over 194 miles per hour.

This year girls participated in the event and judging by the smiles, laughter and excitement it won’t be the last.

“We had a great day today.” Said Cubmaster Robb Letts. “Our first-time girls that have just joined the pack raced and did a great job.  We really had a lot of enthusiasm.”

“We appreciate the support from the public.” Said Letts. “We really appreciate Troop #216 and all they do to support the pack and our efforts here.  We can’t thank the city enough to for allowing us to use the space to host this event.”

Participants were also encouraged to express their originality in the naming of their cars.  This year’s race featured cars with such creative names as: Arachnogreen, Mr. Hot & Spicy, Jimmy’s Last Stand, Cotton Candy Crush, Bama Bear, Duck Car and Bobby.

“We’re very happy that it went off without any hitches or glitches today.” Said Letts. “That is just how we like it on race day.  We like a nice smooth race day with lost of winners.  Everybody here today was a winner because they came out and did their best.

The Disctrict Derby will be held on April 6 at the Trussville Civic Center.  Pack #216 will be hosting the event.
