District attorney race narrows to Anderton versus Carr
Both remaining candidates have held the office in the past year, following the indictment of former D.A.-elect Charles Todd Henderson.
Tuesday’s primary election narrowed the field of candidates for Jefferson County District Attorney from four to two, with Republican Mike Anderton and Democrat Danny Carr headed to November’s general election.
Anderton, the incumbent, defeated challenger Bill Veitch, the former head of the JeffCo D.A.’s Bessemer division. Anderton received 59 percent of the vote, while Veitch received 40 percent of the vote.
During the campaign, Veitch had filed a lawsuit calling for residents of the Bessemer Cutoff to be able to vote in the primary, saying that the 1953 law preventing them from doing so had been rendered obsolete by a later law. The lawsuit is ongoing, though the Alabama Supreme Court said that it would likely have no bearing on election results.
Anderton will face off in November against Democrat Danny Carr, who had served as interim D.A. following the indictment of former D.A.-elect Charles Todd Henderson on perjury charges last year. Gov. Kay Ivey appointed Anderton to complete the rest of the term in November 0f last year.
Carr defeated Raymond Johnson with 78 percent of the vote.
