DOJ program leads to 71 indictments and arrests in north Alabama
Most of those arrested had multiple previous arrests, according to reports.
Seventy-one people have been indicted or arrested in Birmingham and north Alabama as part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, it was announced Monday.
WBHM reports that the arrests were based on accusations of violent crime, illegal weapons possession, and drug charges. Most of the people indicted had multiple prior arrests, according to the report.
The arrests are part of an ongoing program targeting violent crime in the northern part of the state, said U.S. Attorney Jay Town.
