Bessemer Amazon deal finished; announcement expected Friday
Commissioners say that the web retailer is a lock for Jefferson County.
The deal to bring an Amazon fulfillment center to Bessemer has been finalized. JeffCo Commission President Jimmie Stephens confirmed the news to WVTM. An official announcement is scheduled for Friday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Bessemer City Hall.
The Jefferson County Commission recently approved an incentives package to bring Amazon to the city that includes up to $3.3 million in roadway improvements and capital investment reimbursements for the company.
Commissioners also attributed the attraction of the web giant to last year’s “atob” campaign, which attempted to bring the company’s proposed second headquarters to Birmingham. The campaign was unsuccessful in attracting “HQ2,” but the Bessemer deal got Amazon’s attention, commissioners say.
The new fulfillment center is expected to bring 2,000 new jobs to Bessemer.
