Gardendale announces installation of Fieldstown Road turn lanes

Road closures are expected from August 2 to August 13, with further lane closures expected through October 24.

The City of Gardendale has announced that it will begin construction of new left turn lanes at the intersection of Fieldstown Road and Shady Grove Road later this month later this month.

The project, according to a press release, “will greatly enhance traffic flow on Fieldstown Road and provide a much safer intersection at Fieldstown and Shady Grove Road.” Traffic signals will be modified to allow for left turns onto Shady Grove Road, and the shoulder of the road will be widened.

“For those of you, like me, that’s traveled that intersection for years, you know there was very little shoulder at that intersection, and it always concerned me as a parent when I had teenage drivers,” said Mayor Stan Hogeland in a video announcing the project.  “All of that will be corrected… At the end, we’re going to have a much safer intersection.”

Construction on the project is slated to begin on July 30. The stretch of Fieldstown Road between its intersection with Shady Grove Road and its intersection with Lane Drive will be closed for construction from August 2 to August 13. Once the road is reopened to through traffic, one-lane closures are expected to occur “on a regular basis,” until the project is officially completed on October 24.

The City of Gardendale and the Jefferson County Board of Education will organize “a special transportation plan” for families with students whose commute to school will be affected by construction.
