Birmingham Council approves restaurant at Negro Southern League Museum

Councilors defended the decision for the minority-owned restaurant to receive city incentives.

The Birmingham City Council approved funding for the construction of Michael’s Steak and Seafood at the Negro Southern League Museum on Tuesday, but not before admonishing critics of the proposed restaurant.

Councilors said they had received several complaints and questions about the new restaurant, including some claims that the incentives the city was offering Michael’s had not been offered to other restaurants.

But councilors fired back at those complaints. “To date, this is probably the first African-American primarily owned restaurant that we’ve ever given incentives to,” said District 8 Councilor Steven Hoyt. “This is minute compared to what we’ve done for other majority-owned restaurants.”
