Robinson bribery trial enters second week
Two attorneys and a Drummond executive have been charged with conspiring to bribe a state representative.
The federal trial of three men accused of conspiring to bribe Oliver Robinson when he was an Alabama state representative entered its second week Monday, following a first week of jury selection, opening statements, and initial testimony from several Balch & Bingham employees.
BirminghamWatch has a list of highlights from the trial’s first week, which saw opening statements from prosecutors and the attorneys for defendants Joel Gilbert and Steven George McKinney, both attorneys for Birmingham law firm Balch & Bingham, and David Lynn Roberson, a vice president for Drummond Company. The three face six counts based around an alleged attempt to bribe Robinson to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from expanding a clean-up site in North Birmingham.
Potential witnesses for the case include U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Birmingham Mayor William Bell, and a slew of Alabama legislators. The trial is expected to last for several weeks.
