Jury struck in federal bribery trial of Drummond executive, Balch & Bingham attorneys

The trial is expected to begin with opening statements this afternoon.

A jury has been selected in the trial of Drummond Vice President David Roberson and Balch & Bingham attorneys Joel Gilbert and Steven McKinney. The three face six federal charges for bribing former Alabama state Rep. Oliver Robinson to stop the expansion of an environmental contamination clean-up site in north Birmingham.

The jury selection process started Monday and extended into Tuesday morning. Twelve jurors and four alternates have now been selected in the trial, which is expected to last for the next several weeks at the Hugo Black Federal Courthouse.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys also revealed the list of potential defense witnesses for the trail, whcih include U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Birmingham Mayor William Bell, U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, and Robinson himself, who pled guilty to receiving bribes and will be sentenced after giving testimony in the trial.

The trial’s opening statements are slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
