Hoover mayor and council negotiate tax hikes
The mayor’s proposal will generate $20 million in revenue; the council’s will generate $13 million.
Hoover’s city government continues to search for new ways to address a potential budget crisis, the Birmingham Business Journal reports.
Mayor Frank Brocato proposed on June 4 that the city raise its sales and use taxes from 3 percent to 4 percent, and that it double its share of lodging taxes from 3 percent to 6 percent. The move would reportedly create $20 million in revenue for the city.
But on Monday, the city council issued its counterproposal, which halves Brocato’s proposed increase to sales and use tax — from 3 percent to 3.5 percent — and raises the city’s real estate rental and lease taxes from 1 percent to 2 percent. This is expected to generate $13 million in revenue.
