JeffCo Commission: Amazon campaign was worth the money
Its headquarters might not be coming to Birmingham, but the commission is claiming credit for the fulfillment center planned for Bessemer.
Jefferson County commissioners say that last year’s campaign to bring Amazon to Birmingham was “one of the investments this county commission has made,” BirminghamWatch reports.
It was reported last month that the online retail company is close to finalizing plans for a fulfillment center in Bessemer — which, while not quite Birmingham, still benefitted from the metro area’s big push to house the company’s second headquarters. Birmingham is no longer a contender for Amazon HQ2 — the current favorite is Raleigh, North Carolina — but the pending Bessemer deal is a result of the city’s “atob” campaign, commissioners said.
The new fulfillment center would bring 1,500 new jobs to the Bessemer area. Commissioner David Carrington said that construction of the new facility should begin “before you know it,” with plans to open in fall 2019.
