The Irondale City Council passed a 1-percent occupational tax this week despite opposition from residents, the Birmingham Business Journal reports.

The tax is meant to address a $1.6 million deficit facing the city budget. A proposed property tax raise for the city failed to pass a vote held in April, which led Mayor Charles Moore to remark that “tough decisions” were ahead for the city.

The tax will go into effect in the next 90 days, according to reports.
