Silvertron Café, longtime Birmingham restaurant, announces closure
After 32 years, the Forest Park/South Avondale restaurant will close its doors.
Birmingham’s Silvertron Café has announced it will shut down after 32 years in business.
The restaurant, located in the Forest Park/South Avondale neighborhood, is closing due to a “serious illness” in the family of owners Marco and Elan Morosini, necessitating a move to Italy, according to a post on the Silvertron’s Facebook page.
“We are grateful to have been woven into the fabric of your daily lives, and will treasure the memories and friends made at Silvertron Cafe,” the post says.
The Morosinis have owned the Silvertron since 2007. The restaurant had previously been owned by a group of investors, including Otey’s Tavern owner John Otey Hutchinson, in 2006. They took over the restaurant from previous owner Alan Potts, who had been found dead that year of a gunshot wound in the café’s kitchen.
Under the Morosinis’ ownership, the Silvertron became more engaged in the community, including working with city government to create the “Heart to Table” program, which worked with local restaurants to feed the homeless at the city’s warming stations.
