Birmingham City Council approves funding for summer coding program
Lawson State Community College will host four weeks of app development classes for middle- and high-school students.
The Birmingham City Council voted Tuesday to approve funding for a coding “boot camp” that will be open to 100 Birmingham City School students, BirminghamWatch reports. The camp will be held at Lawson State Community College and will instruct students in developing mobile applications.
Lawson State launched its own coding program in January, which “impressed” Apple CEO Tim Cook when he visited earlier this year, said President Dr. Perry Ward.
“We could very possibly have a student here in Birmingham create a 99-cent app and become a $10 million entrepreneur,” Ward told the council.
The program will be open to 50 middle-schoolers and 50 high-schoolers. The program will take the form of four four-day sessions across four weeks. Ward indicated that the program could likely extend into the fall.
