Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin endorses Walt Maddox for governor
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox gets a “gut” reaction from Birmingham’s mayor.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has endorsed a fellow Alabama mayor in the race for governor.
Woodfin announced Thursday that he would endorse Walt Maddox, the current mayor of Tuscaloosa, for the state’s top office, saying that Maddox was capable of making “critical decisions” necessary for the office. Maddox is running in the race’s Democratic primary against Sue Bell Cobb and James Fields.
In his endorsement speech, delivered outside Birmingham’s intermodal transit facility, Woodfin said that Maddox was a political inspiration for him. “”Walt’s ability to convince people to work together — black and white, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican — has inspired how I seek to lead Birmingham to a new era of excellence,” he said.
Woodfin added that his endorsement was a “gut” decision. “We’ve had enough elected officials being timid for political safety reasons,” he said. “Sometimes you got to go with your gut, sometimes you have to take risks and sometimes have to do what you know is right.”
