Birmingham appoints new police chief after lengthy search
Former L.A.P.D. commander Patrick D. Smith will head up the city’s law enforcement.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin announced Monday that he had selected former L.A.P.D. commander Patrick D. Smith as the city’s new police chief, BirminghamWatch reports.
The announcement came after a lengthy search to replace former Chief A.C. Roper, who announced his retirement the day after Woodfin took office in late November.
Interim police chief Orlando Wilson resigned in April amid accusations of child abuse — he maintained that the allegations were “false,” and the Trussville Police Department announced Monday that it would not press charges against him — and was replaced by former Deputy Chief Henry Irby, who was also one of the finalists to fill the role of chief permanently.
Woodfin also announced that State Rep. Allen Treadaway (R-Birmingham) would serve as deputy chief. Treadaway said he intends to remain in his position in the state House in addition to his new role.
