Birmingham to host public budget hearing Monday night

At $436 million, it’s the city’s largest budget ever.

Birmingham citizens will have a chance to weigh in on Mayor Randall Woodfin’s proposed budget Monday evening.

A public hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at City Hall to collect comments, questions, and concerns on the FY 2019 budget — which, at $436 million, is the city’s largest ever. Woodfin presented the budget to the city council earlier this month.

When presenting the budget, Woodfin said it represented “some difficult and responsible decisions that must be made to support our priorities.”

The budget cuts nearly $1 million from the mayor’s office, and also sees the creation of a new Department for Innovation and Economic Opportunity. The budget also increases its budget for employee pensions by $2.9 million to address the city’s unfunded pension problem.

You can read a full breakdown of Woodfin’s proposed budget over at BirminghamWatch.

Those who wish to speak at the public hearing are encouraged to arrive and sign up between 4:30 and 5:15 p.m.
