Birmingham restaurant wins prestigious culinary award

Highlands Bar and Grill — and one of its pastry chef — took home awards from the James Beard Foundation Monday night.

A Birmingham restaurant received a national honor Monday night, as Highlands Bar and Grill won the James Beard Foundation Award for the nation’s most outstanding restaurant. Dolester Miles, one of the restaurant’s pastry chefs, won the most outstanding pastry chef award as well.

The restaurant had been nominated for the award for nine consecutive years, the Birmingham Business Journal reports.

“I think that one of the reasons that we’re all here is that we’ve been caught up [in] the magic that the restaurants and striving for excellence — trying to create a little bit of beauty in one’s work and hopefully in our guests’ day,” owner and chef Frank Stitt said as he accepted the award.
