BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Legion have rescheduled their inaugural game from Saturday to Sunday due to the threat of extreme weather.
The announcement came on Thursday in regards to the franchise opener. The club said that it will now host Bethlehem Steel on March 10 at 4 p.m. Gates to BBVA Compass Field will open at 2:00 pm for pre-game festivities, including music, interactive games and happy hour prices on food and drink.
“The safety of our fans and players are of paramount concern,” said Legion President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “Given tragic recent events, this is not a decision we take lightly and have factored information from the National Weather Service and local authorities. We remain anxious for the start of our inaugural season and look forward to Sunday!”
Set to debut as an expansion member of the United Soccer League, Birmingham Legion is the Magic City’s first and only locally owned and operated professional soccer franchise. The club will play home matches at a newly renovated BBVA Compass Field, on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, beginning on Sunday.
