Birmingham Police make arrest in case of arson, murder

BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Police reported that detective have charged a suspect in connection with a homicide investigation from 2018. The incident occurred on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at approximately 8:10 p.m.
Officers from the South Precinct responded to 1602 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard on a call for a building fire. After officers arrived they were alerted that a victim was found inside the location and was in the process of being transported to UAB hospital for treatment. Officers received information that the victim later succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased, according to authorities.
Police identified the victim as Carly Eugene Vinson, a 63-year-old white male, from Indian Springs.
On January 8, 2019, officers received information that the fire was intentionally set and also located a possible suspect. After interviewing the suspect and reviewing the evidence collected, investigators obtained warrants on the suspect.
Authorities identified the suspect as John Burton, a 39-year-old black malke, of Birmingham.
Police said they had obtained warrants on Burton for first degree arson and capital murder. Burton is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
