Finalists for Birmingham police chief job revealed
Acting Birmingham police chief joins candidates from Los Angeles, Dallas, in final stretch of search.
The three finalists for the role of Birmingham police chief have been revealed, and the list includes a Birmingham native as well as candidates from Dallas and Los Angeles.
One candidate is already serving in the position. Deputy Chief Henry Irby took over the job after the resignation of interim chief Orlando Wilson last week; he has been a member of the department since 1985. You can read Irby’s full resumé here.
The second candidate, Malik Aziz, has been a member of the Dallas Police Department, where he currently serves as deputy chief over special investigations, since 1992. According to Aziz’s LinkedIn profile, he is also the former national chair and former executive director of the National Black Police Association. You can read Aziz’s full resumé here.
The third candidate, Patrick D. Smith, is currently a police commander at the Los Angeles Police Department, where he’s worked since 1990. You can read Smith’s full resumé here.
These three finalists have been narrowed down from a pool of more than 50 applicants, according to a press release from Mayor Randall Woodfin’s office. Woodfin is slated to interview the finalists over three days from April 23 to April 25.
