JeffCo sheriff investigating social media threat to Clay-Chalkville Middle School
“No credible threat” found against students, but sheriff’s office still investigating.
A student is in custody and being questioned about a threat directed to Clay-Chalkville Middle School via social media last week, the Trussville Tribune reports. Authorities say there have been no arrests at this time.
The investigation centers around whether the original post was altered and whether anyone else is involved.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office does not believe any students are in any danger. As an abundance of caution, additional deputies were sent to the school on Monday morning.
At 11:05 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office issued the following statement:
“Deputies are investigating a social media post that was alleged to have been a threat against Clay-Chalkville Middle School.
“On Saturday April 14, deputies were made aware of a social media post that was being shared among students that claimed a student would be bringing a gun to the school today.
“Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Division investigated this case over the weekend. At least one student involved has been identified and is being questioned. There could be others involved that altered and re-posted the message.
“Investigators have found no credible threat to the school, students, faculty or staff. Once completed, the results or the investigation will be presented to Juvenile Court for a determination of what, if any charges, are filed against those involved.”
Jefferson County Board of Education spokesperson Whitlee Lusk referred all questions to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, stating that it was a law enforcement issue at this time.
