Birmingham City Council approves $1.762 million incentive package for Shipt
The grocery delivery company also purchased a parking deck from the city for $1 million.

The Birmingham City Council voted Tuesday to approve a $1.762 incentive package for grocery delivery company Shipt, BirminghamWatch reports.
The company had asked for the incentives to grow and develop its Birmingham headquarters; the incentives will be paid by the city as reimbursements for the company’s talent-finding efforts. Shipt plans to hire 881 new employees, and Birmingham will pay them $2,000 for each new hire.
Josh Carpenter, the director of innovation and economic opportunity for the mayor’s office, described the proposal as “one of the biggest economic development projects to come before this council… It’s a great opportunity for the city to invest in the future of our workforce.”
Shipt, which also purchased a parking deck adjacent to its headquarters from the city for $1 million, is also seeking up to $720,000 in incentives from the Jefferson County Commission.
