Birmingham City Council passes FY 2019 budget
The $436 million budget includes money for neighborhood associations and a reduction to BJCTA funding.
For the first time in several years, the Birmingham City Council has passed a budget before the start of the fiscal year, BirminghamWatch reports. The $436 million budget will take effect on July 1.
“Collectively, the message we’ve sent today is, ‘We know how to pass a budget on time, thereby knowing how to work together, negotiate, compromise and communicate with each other,” said Mayor Randal Woodfin. “I think for the most part, the majority of the council was very receptive to our style and process of making sure we could incorporate a majority of wants and needs. We were not able to get everything for everyone, but for the most part we did what we could.”
The budget includes a reduction in money the city pays the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (it was $10.8 million last year; down to $5 million this year). It also restores funding for neighborhood associations after Woodfin’s previous budget proposal zeroed out that funding.
