Shipt officially announces Birmingham expansion plan
With incentives in place from the city, the grocery delivery company plans to add 881 new employees.
Grocery delivery company Shipt has officially announced that it plans to expand its Birmingham headquarters during a press conference Thursday. The company plans to add 881 new employees to its workforce in the city, the salaries of whom will average around $48,000.
The announcement was not a surprise. On Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council voted to approve a $1.762 million incentives package for the company, which will see the city paying Shipt $2,000 for each new employee hired as a reimbursement for talent-finding costs.
The city also recently sold the company a parking deck adjacent to its downtown headquarters for $1 million. That money, Mayor Randall Woodfin said, would go directly into the city’s neighborhood revitalization fund.
Gov. Kay Ivey spoke at the press conference, thanking Shipt CEO Bill Smith for keeping the company in Alabama. “You could have taken this headquarters anywhere in the United States, but you chose to do it right here in Birmingham, Alabama,” she said. “On behalf of all Alabamians, thank you.”
Last year, Target bought Shipt for $550 million; the company was originally founded in 2014.
